Over 310 students representing 81 different agencies across the state participated Saturday and Sunday in Mineral Wells’s 24th annual North Central Texas Area Fire Protection School.

That’s well up from 246 students and 74 agencies who showed up last year and more than the 250 to 300 students originally expected by the school coordinator.

“It went really well,” Mineral Wells Volunteer Fire Chief Steve Perdue said.

Participants, including paid and volunteer firefighters, received instruction and practice in fire and EMS classes for a total of more than 4,100 training hours, according to Perdue.

Intended to help firefighters and EMTs work towards becoming certified in specific areas, the fire school was held at Wolters Industrial Park and sponsored by MWVFD and the Emergency Services Training Institute.

Topics covered included fire cause determination, hazardous materials, auto extrication, rappelling and emergency driving.

The Texas Forest Service taught wild land firefighting and, using the Lake Mineral Wells State Park as a training ground, Ronnie Perry of Texas Task Force I taught wilderness search and rescue.

Assistant chiefs Lynn Reasoner and Lane Voelcker taught vehicle rescue and airbag classes. Firefighters Kim-John VanNatta and Sam Singleton were instructors for the field rotations, where propane burns happened Saturday, including car and gas meter fires.

To end the weekend, firefighters repeatedly burned a donated vacant house in the 1100 block of S.E. 2nd Avenue for practice on Sunday afternoon.

The school is around the second or third largest of its kind in the state, excepting the Texas A&M school, according to Perdue.
