FURR'S FIRE UPDATE: ATF leads probe into Furr fire

Family hopes to resume operations

As the remains of the fire at Furr Building Materials continued to smoke Monday, the Furr family continued to inventory what is left and make plans to reopen their business.

“We hope to be able to set up a temporary office soon,” Brenda Furr said. “It’s just kind of a day-to-day thing [right now].”

The main store and warehouse building of the 53-year-old family business burned to the ground Friday morning, the cause unknown.

“[The fire] had blasted through the whole attic and was coming through the roof [when the firefighters arrived around 5 a.m.],” Mineral Wells Volunteer Fire Chief Steve Perdue said.

The Mineral Wells Fire Department and the Mineral Wells Volunteer Fire Department, as well as volunteers from Cool-Garner, Adell-Whitt, Millsap, Graford and Palo Pinto, responded to the fire in the 3500 block of U.S. Highway 281 North. Weatherford College also sent a transport tanker equipped for firefighting to help.

The fire investigation has been turned over the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the family is waiting on them to find out what they are allowed to do, according to Furr.

Furr said they were told ATF would soon be bringing large equipment to the scene to continue their investigation.

“We need to get with the city, [too],” Furr said.

The site does not have electricity and other specifics need to be worked out, as well.

They have already arranged for calls to the business to be forwarded to a working number.

In the meantime, Furr said they’ve been taking inventory of the merchandise that survived outside the building, including lumber, plywood, sheet rock, insulation, shingles and PVC pipe and meeting deliveries and salesmen at the site.

“We’re just realizing all that’s gone,” Furr said. “It’s just unbelievable.”

“We really appreciate the support of the community,” Furr said.

Customers have been dropping by to ask what they can do to help and offer support, Furr said.

“We really appreciate the rural fire departments that came out, too,” Furr said.
