Heavy rainfall in portions of the county Tuesday night aided personnel still battling two large wildfires, known as the Rhodes Ranch II and Dark Valley fires.
Rain gauges at Mineral Wells Municipal Airport registered 1.7 inches of precipitation Wednesday morning.
Texas Forest Service Public Information Officer Joe Kozlowski said the rain was an immediate help, though the accompanying lightning could pose some future problems.
“Things are looking pretty good,” he said. “The rain definitely seemed to help. Dark Valley got an inch or more of rain with a little less on the Rhodes Ranch II.” While crews remained on the scene Wednesday to monitor the situation, Kozlowski said the focus will shift to looking for additional possible lightning strikes after the skies clear and the rain-soaked ground begins to dry.
