Accountants give MWISD a clean audit for 2011-12

By LIBBY CLUETT

Mineral Wells ISD received a “clean” bill of fiscal health Tuesday from Snow, Garrett, Williams Certified Public Accountants. Partner Gary Snow concluded his report by telling school trustees, “This is a very good report.”

“You did a very good job on budgeting this year,” he said.

In the 2011-12 fiscal year, ending Aug. 31, the district increased its unassigned fund balance by $1.145 million, ending the year with $3.887 million in savings. While Snow said the district ended the year with “a nice increase” in fund balance, he said he'd like to see the board closely monitor its budget to increase this to the “optimum fund balance” of $5.757 million.

“The Texas Education Agency likes to see three months minimum [in operating expenses] of fund balance,” he added.

“Also, the board should continue to review construction, equipment expenditures and other improvement and determine the amount of reserves, if any, that should be assigned or committed for future needs,” the auditing firm noted in

its management letter.

In other business Tuesday:

• Superintendent Gail Haterius announced the district will host a community luncheon at Holiday Hills Country Club on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The luncheon will feature Dr. Bonnie Lesley, educator, and Linda Etheridge, former Waco mayor, discussing legislative issues facing public schools, including school funding and vouchers. For information and a reservation, call Judy Brown at (940) 325-6404 or 325-5103 by Jan. 29.

• The district’s School Health Advisory Committee will hold two open-forum informational meetings on MWISD’s future random drug-testing policy for students next school year. Meetings will be at 6 p.m. – Jan. 31 at the high school and Feb. 4 at the junior high. The committee encourages parents to attend to learn about drug use and drug testing.
