Awning fire quickly quelled

Mineral Wells firefighters extinguished a fire on the awning of a historic downtown building Monday afternoon.

Crews received the call around 12:30 p.m. and responded to a thrift shop at 117 N.E. 1st Street.

According to Sam Streun of the MWFD, firefighters had the blaze extinguished in about five minutes, but remained at the scene to clean up the remnants of the burned canopy.

A police investigator at the scene said no cause had been determined as of Monday afternoon and said the case remained under investigation.

According to Mike Rusher, the building’s owner, two individuals were cleaning the second floor of the building when the fire started.

There were no reports of injuries.
