Blue is this week’s Pet of the Week. A 1-year-old female Catahoula Leopard dog, or Catahoula Cur, Blue was brought to the shelter as a stray, roaming near Natty Flats Smokehouse – she has good taste.
This medium-sized beauty has a slick “blue” coat (which resembles a blue merle in other breeds) with tan legs and white markings.
Blue very well could be a full-blooded Catahoula, named after Catahoula Parish in Louisiana, for she has the breed’s hound-like ears along with the coloring, body size and shape. She also has luminous eyes that are mostly golden, mixed with light blue or green. The breed is known for having “cracked glass” or “marbled glass” eyes, which Blue has.
Bred for stamina in herding, Catahoula Leopard dogs are extremely agile and athletic. This breed is characteristically loyal, loving, intelligent and full of independent thinking, which means they need consistent positive training and reinforcement. They definitely need a yard with a secure, high fence.
Initially shy, Blue loves attention from humans she will quickly grow to trust. Shelter staff said she gets along well with other dogs. She would make a great running companion or a nice addition to an active household. As loyal and intelligent as she seems, Blue would likely make a great protector for her new family.
To adopt Blue or any number of dogs and cats, contact the Mineral Wells Animal Shelter at (940) 328-7752. The adoption fee includes a rabies shot and spaying.
