W.K. Gordon Center to focus on Dublin Bottling Works’ flavorful past

STEPHENVILLE—The tasty history of Dublin Bottling Works will be explored at a free program at the W.K. Gordon Center in Thurber at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 27.

A representative of the company will be on hand to talk about the 122-year history of the bottler. Those attending will also be able to sample the company’s current products.

In 1891, founder Sam Houston Prim negotiated a deal with Dr Pepper creator Wade Morrison and became the first plant to bottle the now famous drink. As Dr Pepper became more popular, the little plant in Dublin changed very little, maintaining its recipes and style of bottling.

Dublin Bottling Works was run by the Prim family until the death of Mr. Prim’s daughter, Grace Prim Lyon, in 1991, when she left the company to longtime employee W.P. Kloster.

Dublin Bottling Works became famous for its Dr Pepper manufactured with pure cane sugar, popularly known as “Dublin Dr Pepper.” Through the years, Kloster stubbornly refused to change his recipe or incorporate the cheaper corn syrup sweetener into his drinks. Though the company no longer produces Dr Pepper, it has maintained its loyalty to pure cane sugar, which is used in all the drinks manufactured by Dublin Bottling Works.

The W.K. Gordon Center is a museum and research facility of Tarleton State University located at exit 367 on Interstate 20 midway between Fort Worth and Abilene – about 34 minutes southwest of Mineral Wells.

Motorists from the west should leave I-20 at exit 363 to avoid construction delays. Regular hours for the center are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, closed on Mondays. For more information please call 254-968-1886.
