Clean out the shotgun and start practicing for the upcoming “Clay Shoot for Cayson,” benefitting the Shaken Baby Alliance.
The event takes place Friday, March 5, at the Alpine Shooting Range in southeast Fort Worth, near Rendon. Costs are $125 for individuals and $400 per team of four shooters. Registration begins at 8 a.m. March 5 and shooting begins at 9 a.m.
Teams will shoot 100 challenging targets from 12 diverse shooting stations. Breakfast and lunch are provided and the day includes other activities.
The event is held in memory of 2-year-old Cayson Mosley of Perrin, who died on Sept. 24, 2005, after sustaining severe head trauma and other injuries while in the care of his mother’s boyfriend, Mark McLaughlan.
According to the child’s mother, Jennifer Mosley, the Shaken Baby Alliance provided assistance to prosecutors and helped prepare for the case in which a Palo Pinto County jury found McLaughlan guilty of capital murder last February. He was sentenced to life in prison and died Dec. 29 of undetermined causes, pending autopsy.
“It is a privilege for me, as Cayson’s mother, to help establish this clay shoot in honor of Cayson – so the Shaken Baby Alliance may continue to help prevent this from happening to other parents as well as educate officers, [Child Protective Services] workers, prosecutors and many others in what to look for when this horrible tragic act strikes again,” stated Mosley in an announcement for the event.
The Shaken Baby Alliance is a national non-profit organization based in Fort Worth.Founded in 1998, the alliance has provided, free of charge, support for families and professionals, prevention of child abuse and justice for the victims.
“Medical intervention alone cannot save our children from the monsters that live among us,” stated Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s Department Captain Craig Goen and chief investigator for the Mosley case. “Prevention is the only way. Please come out and support the Shaken Baby Alliance so we do not lose another Cayson, another precious child.”
