Police: social media tips lead to local arrest

FROM STAFF REPORTS

A Mineral Wells man was arrested Thursday for credit card or debit card abuse after local residents posted online tips about his identity.

According to Mineral Wells police, Xavier Orlando Gonzales, 36, of Mineral Wells, is suspected to be involved in the theft of several cards earlier this month. One of the stolen cards was tracked to a purchase at a local retailer and surveillance footage showing a man believed to be the suspect was released along with a Crime Stoppers request for information.

Though no one called directly with tips, a police spokesperson said comments made on social media sites after the Index published the request led to Gonzalez’s identification and arrest.

Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s Office reports indicate Gonzalez was arrested in the 2500 block of East Hubbard Street and was released from county jail Thursday on $10,000 bond.
