Special to the Index
GORDON – A Las Vegas-type show, “Remembering Elvis,” starring R.J. Quick, an Elvis tribute artist, is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Gordon High School gym. Tickets are $10 for adult/college age; $5 for students. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a silent auction. Some great Elvis items as well as other items will be available for bid. A special item offered is an old 1923 Victrola.
This event is sponsored by and benefits CARE (Community Animal Rescue Effort).
This follows the Annual Gordon Antique Tractor Pull, so come and relax to two hours of Elvis tunes. At the same time, you will be helping needy animals.
CARE is a fairly new non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to assisting the communities with the aide of giving proper shelter and care to stray, abandoned and abused animals. Their goal is to build a state approved shelter/kennel to board the animals. Fund raisers have been the means in which to fund their efforts.
The organization was begun in Strawn but now serves the entire area. They began with 10 members and it has now grown to 60. The proceeds will go toward funding their low-cost spay/neuter program and building fund. In their two years of operation, they have rescued and placed 260 animals in permanent homes.
Peggy McQueary, with Laura Sharp and Julie Swanson, founded CARE. They had a desire to help animals by rescuing abused and abandoned animal of the community. After a while, Laura and Julie left the group but Peggy continues to work with CARE. She is the driving force behind the group. They have a real heart for animals, especially ones that are defenseless and helpless and need a caring human to come to their aide.
If you wish to learn more about this worthwhile organization, you can contact them at (254) 631-6937, (817) 929-5355 or write CARE at P.O. Box 12, Strawn, TX 76475.
