Mineral Wells Mayor Mike Allen, accompanied by three local Daughters of the American Revolution officers, signed a proclamation Friday afternoon in support of U.S. Constitution Week.
In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to honor the nation’s governing document by setting aside the week of Sept. 17-23 to promote its awareness.
President Dwight Eisenhower signed the Congress-approved resolution into law the following year.
According to information provided by DAR Regent Carla Hay Perdue, the observance emphasizes Americans’ responsibility in protecting and defending the Constitution, to inform citizens about the role the document plays in establishing our national heritage, and to promote historical study into the events leading to the Constitution’s framing in September 1787.
Following his signing of the proclamation, Allen said he proudly supports the Constitution and feels America needs to embrace the document’s guiding principles now more than ever.
The DAR, with more than 165,000 members and 3,000 chapters across the world, is considered the largest women’s patriotic organization in existence.
