POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE – Hundreds of athletes are expected to descend on Possum Kingdom Lake this weekend for Sunday’s inaugural TRIFECTA Triathlon.

The USATriathlon-sanctioned event, featuring swimming, cycling and running, is being produced by Austin-based sports management firm Cadence Sports Inc. and will directly benefit YMCA Camp Grady Spruce – the starting and ending point for the event.

Gary Metcalf, president of Cadence Sports, said he expects a little over 300 triathletes for this inaugural year. The field includes at least seven professional athletes, some of whom he said competed at the Olympic Trials and one who placed 15th this year at the half Ironman World Championships in Las Vegas.

“This is the first year and we have big plans for the future. It’s a long-term effort,” he said, adding, “The first year is always the hardest.”
