Crazy socks

Santo teen collecting socks for children in hospital at Christmas; bring donations to the Index by Tuesday

Socks are so often underrated, but not if you’re a youngster who is hospital bound.

This was one reason Santo Senior Megan Gulliford started collecting Crazy Socks for kids who spend Christmas in Cook Children’s Hospital five years ago and has shepherded the growing program.

“We have started [giving out] between 500 and 700 pairs of socks each year … to [children in] Cook Children’s,” said Gulliford, who said she had the opportunity to give the socks to many of the children there last year.

This year, she has set a Dec. 2 deadline to collect socks. The goal is to get socks to children in the hospital before Christmas.

“The way people can get involved is just by bringing socks,” said Gulliford. “We need anywhere from newborn sizes to sizes for 18-year-old males and females.

“The older girls love the toe socks [socks with individual toes] and guys really don’t have a preference,” said Gulliford.

So, while out shopping, grab some of the craziest socks available for the cause. Mineral Wells community members can bring the socks to the Index offices, located at 300 S.E. 1st Ave. Gulliford will collect sock donations from the Index pickup location on Tuesday.
