Oysters, macaroni and beer were three staples the Texas Pacific Mercantile and Manufacturing Company had to stock to keep the immigrant workers of the Texas & Pacific Coal Company happy during its 40-year history.

From 1894 to 1934, the period that saw its parent company go from coal mining to oil drilling, the TPM&M operated and managed the various commercial and service enterprises essential to life in Thurber, Texas – now a ghost town along Interstate 20 west of Fort Worth near the Palo Pinto and Erath county lines.

• Reflections on Neighborhood Watch and Solicitations

  A couple of things happened that encouraged me to write this particular column. First of all, our neighborhood formed a Neighborhood Watch group. This is being encouraged by Chief of Police Dean Sullivan and supported by the Mineral Wells Police Department. As we have had one home invasion in our neighborhood (burglars broke in while the neighbors were asleep in bed), we really want to watch out for each other!
