Anniversary: Floyd, Mary Lyon to celebrate 66 years of marriage

Floyd and Mary Lyon will celebrate 66 wonderful years together on Feb. 3, 2012.

Floyd Alvie Lyon and Mary Catherine Davis met in the big city of Red Springs, Texas, in 1943. After several months of dating, Floyd was drafted into the service of the Army. Floyd had basic training at Camp Fanning, Tyler, Texas. After basic training, he came home on leave and asked Mary to marry him and ,of course, she said yes because they were very much in love.

Floyd was then sent overseas to Germany to serve under Gen. Patton in the Third Army. After the war was over, Floyd returned home Dec. 20, 1945, on leave and Mary and Floyd planned their wedding. On Feb. 3, 1946, they were married in Mary’s grandparents’ home, Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Davis. Floyd had to leave for Camp Crowder, Mo., the night of their honeymoon. She returned to stay with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Davis, because he was sent to Camp Polk, La., to serve until he was discharged several months later.

After Floyd was discharged, they bought a farm southwest of Red Springs. Their first son, James Alvie, was born Feb. 12, 1947. Their second son, Douglas Wayne, was born Aug. 29, 1948, but died the next day. Their third child, a daughter, Shirley Jean, was born March 8, 1950. Shortly after her birth, they moved to Mineral Wells and their fourth child, John Roy, was born Nov. 18, 1954. Their last child, Cathy Elaine, was born April 14, 1956.

All children were raised in the country in the house built by Floyd, about 6 miles north of Mineral Wells, where Floyd and Mary still reside today. Floyd worked as a mechanic for Emmett Maddux, the Chrysler dealership and Ed Lee Chevrolet for several years. In 1969, Floyd and Mary and their two sons, James and John, went into their own business, Lyon’s Garage. They also employed Wayne Glover. After 12 successful years, they retired and Floyd continued working the business at his home for eight years in their garage. Floyd’s total working years as an auto mechanic was over 40 years. Floyd and Mary also had a successful business in rental property for many years.

Floyd grew up with nine brothers and sisters and Mary grew up with eight brothers and sisters. He was a member of the Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s Posse for many years. Since Jan. 20, 1991, Floyd has served as a deacon at Salesville Baptist Church. Floyd and Mary are enjoying being retired and doing the things that make them happy, like being with friends and family. They have five grandchildren  – Teddy, Chuck, Shawnta, Tiffany and Nicole (deceased); and nine great-grandchildren – Paige, Douglas, Tyler, Clarissa, Ryan, Zachary, Tabatha, Chloe and Hope. Floyd and Mary stay young by babysitting their great-grandchildren.

When asked what the secret to being happily married for 66 years, Mary replied, “Love each other, talk things over before you do something, do for each other, be there for each other and with the Good Lord’s help.”

Floyd replied, “We knew the first time we met each other that we were meant for each other.” He also said, “Don’t ever go to bed mad, always forgive each other before going to bed. I thank the good Lord we still have each other.”

Floyd and Mary said they were very proud of all of their children and could not continue to be in their country home without each and every one of them.

“My parents both have great wisdom,” said their youngest daughter, Cathy. “I still go to both of them for advice and their great knowledge. I’m proud to be their daughter and love them very much.”
