The latest addition to Gordon's Main Street is the Backroads Bakery. They are having a grand opening on Thursday, Nov. 18, beginning at 6 p.m. Their bakery is located at Main and State Highway 193.
They will be featuring live music by Gordon locals. Their regular hours will be Fridays, 6 a.m.-3 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Mondays, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Their speciality is fried pies: apple, apricot, buttermilk, cherry, chocolate and lemon.
The bakery was started by Sarah Lively, who lived out of town, hence "backroads." Sarah started making wonderful fried pies in her own kitchen and the business grew from there. Sarah's request for pies became so demanding that she took on a partner. They began selling to hotels and stores. They supplied pies to 80 stores in a 125-mile radius. In 2004 it officially became Backroads Bakery. They were making 4,000 pies per week.
The demand increased, and in 2009 Bill and Carol Reed were approached about buying the business. They purchased the bakery, moved it to town and are now producing over 6,000 per week. These pies have a shelf life of about 10 days. They use no preservatives and the crust is cake-like and not greasy as you find with most fried pies.
Carol and Bill brought their expertise and family into the operation. The building they purchased needed a great deal of repair. Fortunately, Bill has grandparents, Max and Imogene Wheeler, who pitched in to help with much of the work.
Now that the holidays are approaching, Carol will be making holiday desserts (by order): pumpkin pies, cobblers (apple, cherry, apricot, peach and buttermilk). She will also have hand-decorated cookies: gingerbread men, Christmas trees and Snowmen.

Library appreciation tea
The Gordon Community Library is having an Appreciation Tea on Saturday, Nov. 20, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the library. November was chosen as a time of thanksgiving and that is what it is all about! There are so many people who have made out small library a huge success. We just want to thank them.
We have been given furniture, shelving of all kinds, books and books and books. We started our book collection by driving two times to St. Jo, Texas. They generously gave us their duplicates. We then got books from libraries at Springtown, Weatherford and Dublin. Individuals have given us boxes of books, sacks of books and lots of individual books. We soon ran out of space and our museum part is being moved to the Development Corp. building.
We gave three trailer loads of books to the Shriners, who collect books for the Texas Scottish Rites Children's Hospital which has a big summer books sale. This past summer they raised over $5,000, which is used for scholarships. So many of you had a part in that accomplishment. At the present, we have had to weed our books down to only one copy (either a hard back or paper back) and we still can't shelve them all!
We received a Tocker Grant last year to purchase books. We bought many children's, young adult and adult best sellers.
We could never have done this without a lot of help. We have a dedicated group of volunteers. Tavia Tiblets has volunteered to act as temporary director and has done a fabulous job! Other volunteers are Jerry Simeon, Bettie Watson, Charlotte Balding, Linda Clark, Waynell Brammer, Pam Frambo, Holly Goetz, Dick and Marge Sharp, Bruce Rogers, Victoria Low, Shaye Trigg and Betty Allison.
Gold stars are placed on our wall, honoring many donors. There is not enough room to put everyone's name, but know that each of you who has contributed in any way is MOST appreciated!

GORDON – The Gordon Library and Museum received an email from Avalon Bruce of Imperial, Texas. She is moving and found an annual that belonged to her mother, Faye Davis Bruce. She wondered if we would like to have it and I immediately responded that we would LOVE to have this bit of history.

The Gordon City Council recently selected Rhonda Patterson its “Citizen of the Month.” We normally put this information out on the marquee by the bank, but she wanted no part in that.

Gordon's new community center nears completion
Back around 1948, the American Legion No. 544 of Gordon acquired an Army mess hall from Brownwood. (They were unable to get one from Fort Wolters because of difficulty crossing bridges).
