New community center going up fast

GORDON — The new Gordon Community Center, under the auspices of the Gordon Development Corporation and the City Council, is being built at a rapid pace. The next step is to get the roof on and lay the bricks. Gordon will be proud of this new addition and it will serve the community for many years.

The Gordon Library is sponsoring a “Story Hour” each Friday at 10 a.m. for pre-schoolers. All are welcome to attend and hear a story and do an interesting activity. This is under the direction of library board members, Shaye Trigg and Victoria Low.

The Back Street Bakery, owned by Carol and Bill Reed, has moved from the back street to the main street. It is now located at the corner of Main Street and State Highway 193, across from the bank. They make delicious fried pies that are distributed far and wide.  (Another related story will be coming soon about their operation,)

The Gordon Library presents a monthly “Speaker Forum.” On Sunday, Oct. 10, Calvin Stoner will be our guest speaker. He has published a book on the history of Gordon Schools entitled “A Glimpse of History, Gordon ISD 2010.” Come get an autographed copy. He has many interesting stories that he will share. Anyone who has ever attended school at Gordon will enjoy it – you will probably find your picture there, too!

The “Over the Hill Gang” resumes their monthly meeting again on Thursday, Oct. 14.  Come at 11 a.m. to hear a speaker. A covered dish luncheon will follow. This will be held at the First Baptist Church. (We are grateful for their hospitality in using their Fellowship Hall for many events since out Community Center was moved in preparation of the new one.) Everyone is welcome, even if you are not “over the hill.”

The Parents-Teachers-Family (PTF) will be sponsoring a Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the old gym. Many booths, good food and fun will be available for all.
