GORDON —
Back around 1948, the American Legion No. 544 of Gordon acquired an Army mess hall from Brownwood. (They were unable to get one from Fort Wolters because of difficulty crossing bridges).
Being quite long, the building had to be divided into two sections for moving. This building was located on city property on East Oak. They dedicated their post to two veterans lost in World War I and II. It was known as the Henegar Boyd Post in their honor.
Over the years this building was used by the entire community for all sorts of activities.
Beside the Legion meetings, the Lion's Club met, with meals furnished by the Women's Club who also met there. In the beginning, square dances were held. All sorts of receptions, showers, fundraisers, dinners, school banquets, family reunions, etc., were able to use the building. Elections took place in the Legion Hall. A small fee was charged.
Mr. Weidner, who owned a business on Main, was contacted for availability and reservations. Later when the "Over the Hill Gang" was organized, they, too, met for a monthly covered dish luncheon and program. One of their special occasions was held on Memorial Day. Poppies were sold and on Sunday a service was held with all the local churches participating.
Eventually, there were just 20 members left. Some of the Gordon residents were Dick Strain, Albert Dickson, Steve Holub, Linus Tucker, Bill Merriman and Hal Weidner.
There was a statement in their by-laws that stated that on disbanding their organization that the property would divert to the city of Gordon.
The Gordon Development Corporation, realizing that a newer building needed to be built, started planning for such. This past spring the final plans were made for a new community center. The city let bids for the old building. Linda and Richard Dennis purchased it and moved it to their property on Interstate 20.
The new building is almost complete. It is a beautiful, red brick structure with a metal roof and 2,500 square feet. Again, Gordon will have a place for all of their activities. The inside is not complete but the Development Corporation is anxious for the community to get a view of what has already been accomplished. So, on Saturday, Nov. 13, there will be an "Open House" from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served, along with our local western band entertaining. Everyone is invited to participate.

GORDON – Thorp Springs Christian College was chartered in 1910 by members of the Church of Christ. Thorp Springs has been the site of several educational institutions.

GORDON – The Gordon Library and Museum received an email from Avalon Bruce of Imperial, Texas. She is moving and found an annual that belonged to her mother, Faye Davis Bruce. She wondered if we would like to have it and I immediately responded that we would LOVE to have this bit of history.

Rhonda Patterson named ‘Citizen of the Month’
The Gordon City Council recently selected Rhonda Patterson its “Citizen of the Month.” We normally put this information out on the marquee by the bank, but she wanted no part in that.

A Gordon Gala was celebrated Dec. 30 at the New York Hill Restaurant. This was an attempt to recognize Gordonites that have contributed to the betterment of Gordon.

The latest addition to Gordon's Main Street is the Backroads Bakery. They are having a grand opening on Thursday, Nov. 18, beginning at 6 p.m. Their bakery is located at Main and State Highway 193.
