In 1986 when Jacqueline Bandy was in high school, she was a member of the Olympics of the Mind program. Little did she know 26 years later she would be director of a program called Destination ImagiNation Inc., which grew out of the Olympics of the Mind programs in her day.
Bandy and two students involved with the program shared some of the highlights at Thursday’s noon meeting of Zonta Club of Mineral Wells.
Destination ImagiNation is an innovative organization that teaches creativity, teamwork and problem solving to students across the U.S. and in more than 30 countries. Teams are tested to think on their feet, work as a team and devise original solutions that satisfy the requirements of the challenges given them. Not only do students learn basic knowledge and skills but how to unleash their imaginations and take unique approaches to problem solving.
Bandy has been a vital part of the Mineral Wells DI program since its inception. Under her direction there have been three state championships and seven trips to global competition, where 27,000 students or more gather together for competition. Last year she coordinated the regional competition here in Mineral Wells. This year she repeats this feat. Over 4,500 students and sponsors will come together in preparation for global competitions.
Bandy says Mineral Wells ISD will six to nine teams in the regional completion. She thinks they will do well. She also encouraged members to volunteer with the competition when it comes to Mineral Wells High School this spring.
Destination Imagination is an extra-curricular program for students, teachers and volunteers. There are no paid instructors. The rewards come from seeing students grow in their knowledge and creativity.
