GARNER – Busy, busy. That is a normal condition at school this time of year.
Academic UIL, basketball games, and programs such as the school Christmas presentation compete with the time students spend in the classroom. The question is often, “Is the effort worth it?” The answer is yes.
These and other activities are important pieces in providing students opportunities to display their talents in competitions between peers in other schools. The events also give students a chance to learn time management skills.
Garner competed in the district UIL One-Act Play last Monday with five other schools: Electra, Archer City, Petrolia, Perrin Whitt and Graford. This was the second year for Garner to participate. The students performed “The Patchwork Quilt” by Rachel Field at Petrolia High School. We received a very favorable critique and finished fourth. Tyler Barton received an honorable mention for his role as Joe, Haleigh Wallace received an honorable mention for her role as Old Mrs. Willis and Tara Barton received an All-Star Cast award for her role as Molly. Other cast members were Jaxon Martin, Cassidy Riggs and Kaitlyn O’Donald. The crew consisted of Jay Mathis, Tiffany O’Donald and Carrie Autry.
Speaking of academic UIL, Garner students will be traveling to Windthorst and Archer City on Wednesday to compete in district junior high and elementary competitions respectively. Last year Garner dipped our toes into these events after a long hiatus with around 20 students competing. This year nearly 120 of our students will be competing in contests as varied as Art Smart and Number Sense. Next week I will relate how the students performed.
Parents and community, be sure and attend our Christmas Program on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The program will take place in the Ryan Gym. Of course Santa himself will be in attendance.
