Travis tradition continues with ‘Yule Be Rockin’

On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the Travis Cadets once again ignited the Travis Auditorium with their smiles, enthusiasm, energy and voices for their annual Christmas Concert, entitled “Yule Be Rockin’.”

The Travis Cadets are directed and led by Cody Jordan. Mrs. Jordan has been teaching at Travis for 10 years, and this is her fifth year to be the Cadet Director. One of the highlights of this concert is the song “Believe,” Mrs. Jordan invites her former Cadets from previous years to come and sing this heart-warming song with them.

This was a tradition that Mrs. Billie Slater started when she was the Cadet director, and Mrs. Jordan loved the tradition so much she wanted to keep it going.

This year the Cadets also performed a song in which they collaboratively wrote a verse together to honor soldiers, in the song entitled, “We the People.”

The Travis Elementary 6th-grade Cadets have been entertaining people in our community for over 30 years; in fact, Mrs. Jordan was a Cadet when she was in the 6th grade, 25 years ago. If you ask any child in our community who has been a Travis Cadet, only the fondest memories come to mind.

This program teaches students to be leaders within their school and community. These students must maintain passing grades and excellent conduct in all of their classes in order to be a Cadet.

The Cadets have won 1st Division trophies in Vocal Choir competition for over 20 years in a row.  For the last four years, they have begun competing in the Show Choir Category, winning the 1st Division Trophy each year, as well. In the 2009-2010 school year, the Cadets brought home the Sweepstakes Overall Trophy of the day out of over 50 other choirs, which was a first for the Cadets.

Each year, you can count on the Travis Cadets to bring something new and exciting to each performance.

The Cadets not only represent our community, but they also represent our state. Representative Jim Keffer extends an invitation to the Cadets to perform in Austin at the State Capitol Rotunda each year. The Travis Cadets are one of the only middle school/elementary choirs who get extended this invitation.

Travis Elementary is very proud to call the 6th-grade Cadets part of their team and to have students represent our school district and community the way these students do.
