Another month of heat ahead and another month of activities in the cool and comfort of the Senior Center is starting.
It’s too bad that Saturday night’s July Fourth community celebration will be at the high school football stadium instead of at the senior center, but I suppose the crowds have precluded the meeting to be at “our place.”
This is one of the premier holidays of our nation, one that draws the tears of love and appreciation for the blessings of being able to live in so great a nation, to be able to criticize the leaders and the society without causing revolution, or worse, imprisonment, when we do so. No matter how we disagree with the legislative, justice or executive branches and leaders of our government, it is still the best in the world. Long may it live
And as I am speaking of July Fourth, the center will be closed Friday in honor of that special day, so don’t show tomorrow.
In view of the extreme heat, the exercise programs have all been moved to 9 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings because of the higher afternoon temperatures. The hour of walking the track indoors will continue, starting at 8 a.m., if walking is your choice.
Look for the announcements soon for more Thursday evening affairs at the center. The Snack Supper on the 18th of June was a highly successful one, considering the attendance number of 18, most of whom learned to play shuffleboard. Citibank will be the sponsor for the upcoming re-play of that evening. There will be at least two Thursday evenings in July in which to enjoy the light snack and the fun time afterward.
Last week’s Senior News contained a boo boo. Happy Feet Foot Care and Grooming has been postponed until Friday, the 10th, due to the closing of the center on the third. If you haven’t made your appointment by now, there is still time to do so.
Texas Neighborhood Services will be at the center on the 7th and the 21st of this month, with their utility assistance program, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Mark this important date on your calendar and be sure to bring all the required paperwork with you, to accompany your application.
Another valuable resource offered at the center is Geriatric Social Worker Cathy Torres, who comes on Wednesdays each month. Her dates for July are the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. She is a contact person who can supply all kinds of helpful information to the older citizen and their families/caregivers. Feel free to take advantage of this service by calling for a reserved time to meet with her to discuss your needs and services.
The usual activities and entertainments continue as scheduled. Consult your calendars for specific dates and times.
