CPA, financial planner invest in downtown

Two businesses share downtown building, ribbon cutting event

Aric Kram and John Berry celebrated their move to a historic building downtown Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Kram, of Kram and Associates PC, said he moved his pubic accounting firm to the location in September but had been renovating the property since June.

He and his wife, Mindy, both certified public accountants, said they were pleased to be a part of downtown.

Kram also expressed his excitement in working with Berry, a certified financial planner and owner of Corner Post Financial Planning.

“Both of our professions are very old professions,” Kram said, which inspired their decision to keep the building in as close to its original state as possible.

“They don’t build structures like these anymore,” he said.

Kram said Berry moved his business into the building about a month after him, adding the two professions “compliment each other very well.”

Berry agreed, saying Kram has been “a real resource for me so its nice to have him around the corner.”

Both Kram and Berry said they have been operating locally since 2006 and see their move to downtown as an important transition.

“I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to move into this building,” Berry said, adding that, as the only certified financial planner in the county, he is glad to work with an ally such as Kram.

Kram explained the renovations he oversaw for the building, which was built in 1904 and has housed several businesses over the years, including Marsden Shoe Store.

He said the renovation began with not much more than a shell of a building and his attempt was to “keep it to its original character as much as we could.”

Exposed brick in the walls and the original tin ceiling are two of the major touches he said signal the historic value of the building, though he noted many other features, including electric, plumbing and air conditioning were all replaced with new components.

Finally, he said, local artist Perri Leavelle has several of her works on display, which brings a new dimension to the space.

“People have to come see it, take a look at it, and if they want it they can contact her and she can either make them a piece or they can buy one of her other artworks out here,” he said.
