The historic building housing the business belched black, swirling smoke into the night air Friday evening while many of the small town's residents were away in Abilene for a state playoff game. Exxon Mobil plans to buy XTO Energy for a cool $31 billion. The all-stock deal is a move to capitalize on a growing supply of natural gas here at home. Bob Simpson, chairman and founder of XTO, reportedly owns some 28,000 acres in Palo Pinto County, acreage that includes the 101 Ranch west of Palo Pinto. Read more about this in tomorrow's Index.
