Cyclist killed in early morning hit-and-run

By CHRIS AGEEcagee@mineralwellsindex.com

According to Mineral Wells police, officers were dispatched to the 4300 block of U.S. Highway 180 East early Wednesday morning in response to a report of someone laying in the roadway.

Authorities arrived on the scene around 12:48 a.m. and found David Valtier with no vital signs.

Emergency Medical Service crews were already en route, police said, though they were unable to revive Valtier. Justice of the Peace Bobby Hart pronounced him dead at the scene.

A passerby initially reported the incident to police after noticing something on the side of the road and returning to the scene to find Valtier's body.

Investigators determined Valtier was riding his bicycle westbound on 180 in the far right lane when he was apparently struck by a vehicle, which then left the scene. Valtier had just his job in Wolters Industrial Park and was heading home when he was struck, police said.

Police spent much of the day Wednesday collecting surveillance footage from security cameras at businesses in the area in an attempt to locate the vehicle responsible for the collision. Police say the vehicle -- possibly a pickup or truck but not definitely -- will have fresh damage to its right front area, including reflectors, turn signals and possibly the right headlight.
